Delaware HIV/AIDS Organization Forced To Close After 28 Years
A Delaware-based organization that has provided HIV prevention, outreach, education and other services for the past 28 years will be closing due to lack of funding, the Bethany Beach Wave reports. The Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC) also provided financial assistance, transportation services and assistance with medical appointments to people living with HIV/AIDS from as far as Philadelphia, according to the Wave. SCAC was funded by both private and government funding. "We just ran out of money," Curt Barrows, president of the SCAC board, said. CAMP Rehoboth, another local organization, said it will step in to assist SCAC clients (Shockley, Bethany Beach Wave, 6/18).

PIH Founder Farmer Discussing Possible Appointment To Coordinate U.S. Global Health Initiatives, Boston Globe Reports
Paul Farmer -- founder of Partners in Health and vice chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School -- said he is in discussions with the State Department about a possible Obama administration appointment to coordinate U.S. global health initiatives, the Boston Globe reports. Farmer made the announcement Monday during a meeting with HMS faculty. Farmer said that he has not decided whether he will accept the appointment if he receives a formal offer but that he is considering it, according to the Globe. The Globe reports that it was unable to confirm whether Farmer is being considered for a full-time policy position or for an advisory role or if the appointment would be a new or existing position. Several top positions at USAID -- including administrator, deputy administrator and the assistant administrator in charge of global health are vacant, the Globe reports. These positions are presidential appointments and would require Senate confirmation. In addition, Farmer could be discussing health policy positions with the State Department. Farmer did not respond for requests seeking comment. PIH and HMS also declined comment. A spokesperson at the State Department would not discuss personnel discussions that are in progress or possible new positions. Laurie Garrett, a global health policy specialist at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the administration"s announcement last week of a $63 billion, six-year initiative that aims to address HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other illnesses could allow new appointees the opportunity to make a significant impact in U.S. global health policy. Garrett, who has known Farmer for several years, added that she would be surprised if he is considering a government position in part because of his extensive involvement with PIH (Smith, Boston Globe, 5/15).

New THT Campaign Tells Younger Gay Men The Facts About Sexual Health Clinics, UK

Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is launching a new campaign to reduce levels of undiagnosed HIV by encouraging gay men, and particularly younger gay men, to start regularly attending sexual health clinics. The campaign will use a stand-alone website (http://www.betterclinics.co.uk), media adverts, posters, condom packs and pin badges to dispel some of the myths about clinics and what the testing process involves. Despite being one of the groups most at-risk of HIV and other sexually transitted infections (STIs) in the UK, 38% of gay men have never had a sexual health screening. Factors dissuading men from accessing clinics include the time it takes, fears over confidentiality, concerns over poor treatment by staff, worries about being recognised, and confusion over paying for tests and treatment. Yet research shows that, once they have used a clinic, most gay men are satisfied with the service they receive and return for testing in the future. The campaign"s key messages include: - 9 out of 10 gay men who"ve used a sexual health clinic would recommend it. - Sexual health clinics keep your details confidential. They aren"t shared with anyone, including your GP. - You can use any clinic in the UK, not just the nearest one. - Tests and treatments are free for everyone - no matter how long you"ve lived in Britain. - You don"t need your doctor to send you to a clinic, but you can go with a friend. - If you have symptoms, say so; you should be seen sooner. Marc Thompson, Deputy Head of Health Promotion at THT, said: "There"s still a lot of misinformation out there about what going for a sexual health check-up entails; I think we"ve all heard the myth about the metal umbrella! "With this new campaign, we"re telling gay men that clinics have moved on. Going for a check-up is now easier and more convenient than ever before. Clinics are free and confidential, you can use any one you want without your doctor knowing and take a friend for support. Once you"ve gone the first time, you"ll wonder what you were worried about, so if you"ve never been tested - or are overdue a test - you should start thinking about making an appointment." The Health Protection Agency estimates that, in the UK, up to 10,000 gay men have HIV without knowing.
