Mental HealthStroke Second Most Common Cause Of Death
It is no coincidence that the stroke theme is being given wide exposure at the ENS Congress. Stroke has become a major challenge for health policy and for medicine in general. It is now the second most common cause of death globally and the major cause of adult disability in the industrialized countries.
Pointing to WHO estimates, Prof. Ferro notes that "the incidence of stroke is expected to increase by another 30 percent by 2020." New preventive and therapeutic strategies are being discussed at the ENS meeting.
"Efforts need to be made to reduce this burden by implementing the known primary and secondary preventive strategies and improving case fatality. This should be done through the application of proven interventions, particularly stroke unit management."
